MESSY dLearning ay on leap day! 2/29/2024

The students worked hard to earn a special, themed day. Because they've been such an awesome class, I decided to make it BIG! We still had our normal day of learning, but I mixed in many special, MESSY ways of doing it.

We began the day with playdough creations during Morning Meeting:

Then we learned about Pointillism and George Seurat, who developed the style of art in the late 1800's. One of his popular paintings, titled "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte," was completed in 1884. It took 2 years to finish! Luckily it didn't take that long for our students to create their sunrise paintings! They used mini marshmellows as their paintbrush.

After recess, we did our math activity. We had to see how many of us could flip a dollop of whipped cream into the air and catch it (in their mouth, or somewhere on their face). We took that data and created a bar graph with it! Then answered some questions, analyzing the data. Like, "How many more students did NOT catch any, than those that did?"

(I am still having tech problems with video recordings done in our classroom. We think it's audio interference from our new announcement speakers they installed this summer.)

After P.E. we practiced words that use our spelling rule this week (/ew/,/ui/, /ue/) by writing them into shaving cream on our desk. This was our messiest activity yet! The kids did so well helping to clean up afterwards.

This activity was SO messy that I didn't get very many pictures!

After our PIZZA party lunch, we had a science lesson called "Elephant Toothpaste." We discussed what a "catalyst" is, and its purpose in science experiments. Then we talked about what a "chemical reaction" can look like. After doing the experiment, we talked about what was happening to cause the foam to erupt, and what it might look like if you took an ingredient away. It was a great discussion! If you'd like to try this experiment at home, here is what you need (it's easy to look up how to do it and find videos!)

Materials:

-hydrogen peroxide (we used 3% but you might try a higher potency, like 6%, to see how that affects the results!)

-yeast (powdered/granulated)

-dish soap

-water

-empty water bottle or Gatorade bottle

-food coloring (optional)

-foil pan to catch the mess

-spoon

-plastic cup

Put about half a cup of hydrogen peroxide in the water bottle, add a squirt of dish soap, and food coloring. Swirl to combine. In a separate cup, mix about 2 tablespoons of yeast with 4-5 tablespoons of water. You need it runny enough to pour into the bottle. Set the bottle in the foil pan to catch the mess, and pour the watery yeast into the bottle. You may need to swirl the bottle a little to get the reaction going quickly.

We ended the day with the Trimester 2 Award Assembly. Way to go Agent Bria, Agent Evelynn, Agent Vayda and Agent Grant!

I'm thoroughly exhausted but I sure hope the kids had a blast today! Their laughs and exclamations were worth it all! Thank you again to all those that donated supplies to make today possible.

Opinion writing: Chairs quit!

On Friday while the kids were at recess, our classroom chairs decided they had had enough of the tipping and not being pushed in to their desk, so they QUIT!

We had to work together to come up with three good reasons why the chairs should come back by Monday morning. This was our whole class collaboration and...it worked! The chairs agreed with their opinion and came back. ;)
